Statement from Progressive States Network on Friday's Mass Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut
New York, NY — Ann Pratt, Executive Director of Progressive States Network, made the following statement today on Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT:
"The horrific events that took place Friday morning in Newtown, Connecticut have shocked the conscience of the entire nation. On behalf of the board and staff of Progressive States Network, we send our deepest and sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and to all who were touched personally by this unspeakable act of violence.
"This is a time of shock and mourning for the entire nation. But it also must serve as a moment for reflection. For years, the political discussion over the prevention of gun violence in the United States has been stifled by powerful special interests. Yet every year has seemed to bring only more violence: both shocking mass shootings that have receive international attention as well as other acts of violence that are sadly everyday occurrences in many communities. In the wake of Friday's shocking events, it seems clear that this debate is now changing in states across the nation and with individuals and lawmakers across the political spectrum.
"We join with President Obama and political, religious, and community leaders across the nation who are coming together in the wake of this tragedy to call for action on gun violence prevention — action which is long overdue. This should include increasing the stringency of background checks for potential gun buyers and reinstating the federal assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. But it also must include a serious and courageous discussion among lawmakers of all political persuasions about further steps we can take to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in the United States. While no single policy or set of policies will eliminate all gun violence, that is no excuse not to act. We owe it to the victims of Friday's tragedy and the victims of gun violence across the nation — whose numbers continue to grow every day — to do so."
