DC Councilmembers McDuffie and Cheh Introduce Legislation for Equal Pay
PSN on April 8, 2014 - 11:05am
Today, in honor of Equal Pay Day, DC Councilmembers Kenyan R. McDuffie and Mary Cheh co-introduced legislation designed to close the pay gap between men and women. The “Wage Transparency Amendment Act of 2014” prohibits District employers from retaliating against workers who discuss their compensation and to collect data on compensation by gender and race. This bill closely tracks the Equal Pay executive orders that President Obama announced he will be signing today to create similar requirements for federal government contractors.
Councilmembers McDuffie’s and Cheh’s bill also requires the District government to publish pay data without identifying information but with information about the agency, position, gender, and race so that District employees who are experiencing wage discrimination are better able to identify it and remedy it with their agencies. For more information, see this press release from Councilmember McDuffie.
