PSN on May 1, 2014 - 1:16pm
The 2014 National Week of Action for Real Prosperity took place the second week of April and it was a huge success! Spearheaded by PSN’s Economic Security Working Group, the Week of Action engaged over 50 legislators in 20 states. Legislators used the Week of Action as an opportunity to draw attention to the economic security issues they are championing in their states.
This year, legislators have continued their work to pass laws that would raise the minimum wage,
provide paid sick days and family leave for workers, and ensure equal pay for equal work.
Legislators who were in session during the Week of Action took the opportunity to increase pressure on their colleagues to pass pro-worker policies by living on the minimum wage and participating in community driven “poverty challenges” to understand and highlight the difficulties low income families face in their day-to-day lives.
Legislators also used this week to highlight the successes and failures of their legislature by holding hearings on retirement security and taking part in a joint blog carnival with MomsRising. In Nebraska, State Senators joined with the public to host a rally to raise the state’s minimum wage. Across the nation, the media took notice and published legislator-written op-eds, articles on legislators’ actions, and stories about the progressive policies legislators were advancing.
All of these actions took place as the US Senate was taking votes on equal pay, minimum wage, and paid leave. Legislators also participated in National Equal Pay Day through a Twitter Storm with the National Women’s Law Center.
The robust collaboration by state legislators and advocates made the National Week of Action a great success, and we look forward to building upon this invaluable work in the future. Below you'll find a round up of all the events and some photos from the Week of Action.
