Legislators From 28 States Urge Congress to Enact Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Look To Progressive Solutions Being Advanced At The State Level

New York, NY – This morning, President Obama delivered an address highlighting the continued importance of federal comprehensive immigration reform at American University in Washington, D.C. State Legislators for Progressive Immigration Policy (SLPIP), a rapidly growing and diverse group of state legislators from around the country, released the following statement in response to President Obama's remarks:

"We applaud President Obama's call today for Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform that values the contributions of immigrants to states and communities and reflects America's core values as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. Comprehensive immigration reform lies squarely in the hands of the federal government. In the wake of federal inaction, state legislators are developing innovative approaches that uphold the rights of all workers; allow local law enforcement to focus on keeping communities safe, rather than serving as federal immigration agents; and welcome immigrants’ economic contributions, particularly as state budgets reel from historic shortfalls. SLPIP will continue to advance forward-thinking state-based approaches to immigration. But this leadership from the states is not enough. Congress and the President need to step up to their responsibility to craft common-sense immigration reform that honors our American values."
