On December 16, 2010, Progressive States Network hosted a webinar on utilizing accountability as a tool for economic growth and recovery. We were pleased to hold this webinar with Good Jobs First, which recently released three new tools concerning economic development transparency. We were also privileged to be joined by Maine State Representative Diane Russell and Deirdre Cummings, Legislative Director at MASSPIRG, who discussed specific campaigns and legislative successes.

Dealing with the aftermath of the recession and continued revenue shortfalls, states cannot afford to hand out enormous subsidies or award lavish contracts with nothing to show in return. To make sure that taxpayer dollars are being used in the best public interest, states must implement stronger accountability measures.

Webinar: State and Local Immigration Laws: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) sponsored a webinar to discuss positive state and local policies and legislation that effectively integrate immigrant workers and residents. The webinar was co-sponsored by ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, the National Immigration Law Center, and Progressive States Network, and took place on December 15, 2010.

Press Call: Lawmakers From 27 States Defend Health Care Law

On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, a bipartisan group of over 75 lawmakers from 27 states announced that they will be filing a "friend of the court" brief defending the constitutionality of the new health care law, in response to the constitutional challenge being led by 20 right-wing state Attorneys General in federal court in Florida. Speaking on a telephone press conference announcing the filing of the brief, lawmakers who signed on to the brief stressed their differences with the right-wing Attorneys General trying to repeal the law, their belief that the law is constitutional, and their continuing work to implement the law effectively at the state level.

Press Call: Right Wing Failing To Nullify Health Care Law In States

On Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 12 noon ET, Progressive States Network held a telephonic press briefing with state legislative leaders on health care from around the nation to highlight the failure of right wing efforts to nullify health care law, as well as the growing opposition to the repeal of health care law in the states.
